Edward G. Robinson, a World War I U.S. Navy veteran, joined the Los Angeles Police Department Police Auxiliary in December 1941 and served throughout World War II. A newspaper at the time wrote that Robinson, who played gangsters in movies like Little Caesar and Key Largo (with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall), was now a “flatfoot himself.” In 1944, he played an insurance fraud investigator who caught Fred MacMurray in Double Indemnity.
